I’m pissed: “NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency” (Link). I never check a bag, ever. I always put everything in the backpack and rolling luggage. There is no fucking way this is keeping us safer. Simple as that. The damned terrorists have won.
Are you sure?

I’m familiar with the plots… but to limit everyone’s ability to bring much of anything on a plane… cost vs benefit. Besides, they caught these people before they even had the ban on liquids. It wasn’t necessary then…
I also like to fly light, and I had a flight out of pittsburgh today. I had a mini-toothbrush, soap, shampoo and the like that I threw away so I wouldn’t have to check my bags.
I heard people complaining about losing all sorts of expensive stuff: contact lens solution, lipstick, fancy lotions and other liquids and gels. Many business travelers don’t like to check luggage because of the delay it causes.
Methinks there is a business opportunity to sell especially made packages that contain three days worth of toiletries which can be sold at the exits to airports.
Either that or sell people $5 worth of space in some luggage you’re taking. Now that would get you popular pretty quick (either by customers or security, whichever is faster).
“Have you always been in posession of your bags?” “Well, yes, but I think that guy just paid me $5 to carry his glycerine”.
Well, the whole point is to make it so people don’t have to wait for their luggage. When I was flying to pittsburgh, I met someone at the airport who was going to the same conference. I walked off the plane with all my stuff and could have gone right to the hotel, he had checked a bag and had to wait around half an hour before he got it. Oftentimes business people don’t check bags because they don’t have the time to pick up checked baggage.
Alternately, I think there will be a massive run on people asking for the complementary toothpaste/soap/shampoo/shaving cream/deodarant/etc. that hotels offer, and I wonder if that will lead them to either up their rates or limit the amount of stuff that people can get from the front desk.
Good points. It’s sad what a lot of people had to leave behind. I love these knee-jerk reactions.
This is silly, the people at the airport never find what they are looking for. I’ve gone on 4 roundtrip flights and always forget to take out the pepper spray I carry around in my purse before the flight, and never once has anybody stopped me! That’s 8 security check-ins and nobody has noticed a large baton-like pepper spray in my purse, which by the way is metal as well, so that should have tipped some people off. That’s a lot more dangerous than somebody’s lipstick.
Yeah, this sucks. I’m flying back home to Seattle from Alaska tommorrow night and I won’t be able to have any liquids on my carry-on. Sucky.
