About Devin Reams

My name is Devin Reams and I founded this site to provide a useful news and review resource for Colorado skiers and snowboarders (and mountain enthusiasts). I've been skiing since I was a little kid (we moved out here when I was five years old) and I plan to ski for years beyond that. Although cosnow is not my full-time job it is my full-time winter hobby. I've been an "Epic Local" passholder since 2006 (when it was called a "Colorado Pass" or "Five Mountain Pass"). My favorite resorts are Beaver Creek and Breckenridge.

No Gas Day

Noah approached me with an interesting idea: No Gas Day.

No Gas Day

It’s simple, try your best to not use gas on May 22nd. That’s the day Noah has chosen. I think that one day isn’t enough, think of it as January 1st: it’s a day to make a resolution. Starting May 22nd I resolve to use less gas. Not becuase I hate Exxon, not becuase I think it’s bad for the environment: it’s bad for me!

I’m spending an extra $10 to fill my tank than I did last year. I drive enough that I have to fill up every 2 or 3 weeks. Some simple math shows that I’m out over $250 each year because prices have shifted. Economics suggests I need to shift my demand (or supply, whichever way you see it) curve and use a bit less. It really can’t be too hard, I have a free bus pass for goodness sakes!

I’ve seen a few petitions and things spread around but this is different. This is a blog meme: something that we hope to pass around the internet through bloggers. If blogs are as powerful as they say they are then why wouldn’t something like this get noticed? I’m thinking social change here, not a “lets lower gas prices by collectively complaining.” I see this as an opportunity to start thinking differently about usage. So, why wouldn’t every blogger make a little post tagged “nogasday” and spread the idea?

Seriously, bloggers are (for the most part) very self-centered and are only interested in a) their taffic, b) their earnings, c) theirselves or any mixture of the three. Why else do you think I have the Feedburner button over on the right side of my site?

My point is this: I wish a few bloggers would see some value in spreading this idea. It’s not an attempt to get the government/oil companies/prices to change. It’s an attempt to get ourselves to change. Who deserves a break more than I do? I wish some people out there had some interesting conservation ideas/tips/stories.

Anyway, I’ll be very interested to see if a) enough people would be willing to post their thoughts about this and b) actively resolve to make some sort of change next week.

Here’s Noah’s original post (with very interesting comments) and here’s Derek’s post with buttons made available.

Finals Story

One more year finished. I had my last final on Tuesday morning… at 7:30. Just thinking about it made me think, “wow, that sucks.” It was my database class, too. It certainly wasn’t at the top of my list of priorities since I’m pretty proficient at Microsoft Access. In any case, I got a friendly call at 7:45am from a friend in the class… wondering where I was. Apparently my answer was “in bed.” I strolled in around 8 and finished up in an hour. I think I was the second one done. I bet I looked like an ass…

Music Management Tips

With over 10,000 songs in my iTunes Library (all legally acquired, I swear) I constantly find myself ‘discovering’ music. But, I’ve also realized there are a ton of albums I never listen to and would never want to in the future. Thus, the following are some of my methods to organizing the madness:

  • Get the tags right: First, I downloaded an automatic tagging program that correctly identified about 90% of my songs. Unfortunately some live albumns (bootlegs) weren’t found so those had to be manually mass-edited. I also found a bunch of poorly named artists. For example, blink-182 vs Blink-182 vs blink182, etc. Then there’s the pleasure of finding ‘The Ying Yang Twins’, ‘Ying Yang Twins’, ‘Ying Yang Twins Feat. ______’ etc. In any case, let the software get the majority of the stuff cleaned up. There are a bunch of programs out there; some free, some not.
  • Find the dupes: From here I realized that I had literally hundreds of duplicates. Unfortunately iTunes has no way to easily remove them and I haven’t found any software that I can trust. So, when I feel ambitious I go through and Ctrl-Select a bunch that I know are simply duplicates. To this day I still have 1738 songs (thats over 4 days of music) that can be removed. Be careful, ‘Zak and Sara’ on ‘Rockin’ the Suburbs’ is not the same as the one on ‘Ben Folds Live’. Thus, I don’t trust the software to do this part.
  • Smart people use smart playlists: Dragging and dropping stuff into playlists is time consuming. Sure, its fun for making party mixes, but I’m usually looking for certain types of music (depening on the mood). Thus, make smart playlists like “‘Genre is ‘Rap’ or Artist is ‘Ying Yang Twins’ or Artist is … and Rating is greater than 3.” This is great becuase it’ll automatically add new music when I add it to my Library. I also have ‘My Top Rated’ (greater than 3), ‘Four Stars’, ‘Five Stars’, and my favorite: ‘New Hotness’. All 4 and 5 star songs that haven’t been listened to 6 times is in this list. I still have over 300 songs that I’ve only listened to a few times (but are freaking awesome). Smart Playlists are extremely powerful.
  • Shuffle your library and start rating: In order to understand how much of my music should be deleted I simply play my Library on Shuffle and rate every song that plays. It helps having a second monitor becuase I can always have iTunes focused. After some time has passed I go back to the albums containing the 1 or 2 star songs and see if there’s anything in that album worth keeping. If not, purge away!
  • Rate songs as soon as you add them: I’m in the habit of listening to every song as soon as I add it to my Library (to prevent future build-up). This way I know (based on ratings) whether or not the music should even stick around for more than a few days. Plus, rating it as soon as I add it automatically pushes it to “New Hotness”, my playlist of choice.

Is there anything out there that you guys have done that works especially well? I’m all about trying new “systems” and I definitely need to get this monster collection under control.

Firefox Find Tip

If you want to quikcly search for something on a page you can simply type ‘/’ and it will pull up the ‘Find’ toolbar. If you’ve ever had to search a man page you shouldn’t have a problem understanding this one. I used to have the option ‘Begin finding when you begin typing’ enabled but that quickly annoyed me when I’d accidently hit a letter and loose my place while reading.
