Ever since SXSW I’ve rethought a lot of what it is I’m doing, what my priorities are, etc. I’ve also noticed that every night I get home from work and I’m tired. Crazy huh? I also get hungry at lunch time.
But seriously, I hate getting home and not feeling motivated to do anything else. So, I’ve gone back to something I perfected in college: napping.
At the time, biphasic and polyphasic sleep were being (re)discovered online. I stopped taking naps after I started my big-boy job out of college. But now, I realize, it’d be great to take a nap and start a ‘second day’ every night.
So my schedule is as follows:
- 08:00 AM – Wake up, go to work, etc.
- 06:00 PM – Leave work, have dinner, etc.
- 08:00 PM – Sleep
- 11:00 PM – Wake up, start ‘second day’ (read, watch movies, blog, etc.)
- 05:00 AM – Go to sleep
My body is, luckily, still used to the 80-90 minute sleep cycles so I can get away with two chunks of 3 hours and feel energized all day.
Two days in and I’ve hit the ground running. I’m pretty stoked. If you have any questions and want to try biphasic sleep / naps just leave a comment.
Ugh. I agree with everything you’ve said here. I went bi-phasic for a stretch last year but ended up breaking it when I moved to NY (and in with my fiancee.) But I totally hate that tired feeling when I get home from working for The Man and want to be able to be productive at night.
Only issue I see is on weekends the 8-11pm block is pretty prime time. Hope it goes well!
This is fascinating to me…I may have to give it a shot!
Hrmm.. My husband actually naps at lunch in his car, but that’s just a quick 45 minute refresher and tends to make him sluggish during the second half of his work day as his body “wakes up”… Must. google. biphasic. sleep.
He’s likely sluggish because the nap is too short (the average sleep cycle is 90 minutes), if he doubled it he might see better results. Here’s a bit more information I’ve compiled around biphasic sleep.
Hey Devin, is this still your sleep schedule (3 hours x 2)? Could you write another post, or does your Biphasic Sleep (Napping) FAQ still apply?
Hey Bryan, it hasn’t been my schedule since shortly after college. Now that I come home to someone else (not just myself) it’s not socially viable. I’d like to try napping again soon. I just haven’t found a good way to work it into a ‘normal’ schedule.
I’ll think more on this. Thanks for the comment..
